DOES YOUR INSURANCE COVER YOU IF YOUR EXTRACT SYSTEM IS NOT CLEANED?

Did you know that greasy and dirty kitchen extraction systems can pose a very serious fire hazard to your business and premises. Unfortunately filters cannot eliminate all the vaporised grease that commercial kitchens produce.  This grease, dirt and residue will then condense, building up on you’re ducts, canopies, hoods, fans and surfaces.  It doesn’t even need a spark to ignite it, as the heat from cooking can cause the grease to spontaneously combust.  Grease can then act like a fuse and carry the fire incredibly quickly through a building.

This is why insurance companies insist that extraction systems are regularly cleaned by professionals to TR/19 guidelines and that you have a valid certificate to prove this.

The B&ES TR/19 Guide to Good Practice recommends regular specialist cleaning of kitchen extract systems based on usage. For insurance purposes, adherence to the guidelines can serve as verification that the ventilation system has been properly cleaned and well maintained. The B&ES warns that insurers will reject claims for re damage caused by grease build up in extract systems.
